Standard: the van, the crew, the heavy lifting
We turn up, we protect the floors, we wrap your furniture in blankets and bubble wrap, we load, we drive, we unload, and everything goes into the room you point at.
What we do not do on a standard booking is take your furniture apart or put it back together. Beds, wardrobes and flat-pack come apart before we arrive and go back together after we leave.
That is the honest limit of it, and it is worth knowing now rather than at eight in the morning with a wardrobe on the landing.
Standard suits you if you are happy with a screwdriver, you have time in the week before, and you would rather put the money into the mortgage than the move.
Premium: we do the lot
Packing materials come with us. We pack, we dismantle, we load, we unload, we reassemble, and we set the house up properly at the other end.
You walk in and the beds are built, the furniture is where it goes, and there is nothing left in flat pieces against a wall.
Premium suits you if you are working the week of the move, if there are children or older relatives in the mix, or if you simply do not want to spend a Saturday finding the Allen key.
What it costs, and what decides it
Volume, distance, and the package you pick. Nothing else moves the number, and the number locks before you book.
Volume is measured in cubic metres, not bedrooms, and bedrooms mislead people constantly. A three-bed in Nevilles Cross with a full loft, a garage and a shed carries more than a four-bed in Belmont where the storage is empty.
Count it roughly yourself if you want. A three-seater sofa is about 2 cubic metres. A double bed and mattress, another 2. A double wardrobe, 1.5. A medium box is around 0.06, so call it 17 boxes to the metre.
Distance barely registers locally. Gilesgate to Framwellgate Moor is nothing. Send the same load to Middlesbrough and you are in different money.
Van and crew, in plain numbers
Our Luton vans hold 20 cubic metres each. That covers most one and two-bed homes in one load.
Every move gets two crew, a driver and a helper. Once a job goes past 30 cubic metres, that becomes three.
A well-furnished three-bed usually lands somewhere between the two, which is exactly why the inventory matters. It decides the van and the crew before the day, and that is why the price does not move afterwards.
The Durham problem: parking
Durham city was not built for a Luton and it shows.
The peninsula, the Bailey and the streets around the cathedral are narrow, often one-way, and carry loading restrictions that a removals vehicle cannot ignore. Crossgate and the older terraces off North Road have no driveways at all, so the van stands on the road or nowhere.
Durham County Council can arrange a suspension or a dispensation where restrictions or resident permit zones apply. The application runs in working days, so it goes on your list the moment the date is fixed.
The practical point is simple. Park outside the door and a two-bed is out in two hours. Park sixty yards back and every single item you own makes that trip on foot, and the day runs into the afternoon.
Moving out of a student let

June and September are the two weeks when half of Durham moves at once. Book early or you will be choosing from what is left, because student let changeovers fill the diary faster than completion days do.
End of tenancy has a harder deadline than a purchase. Keys go back at a set hour, the inventory check follows, and your deposit rides on the state of the place.
Two things that save arguments. Book the van for the morning so the afternoon is free for cleaning. And photograph the meters and every empty room before you hand the keys over.

The questions worth asking any removal company in Durham
Ask these of everyone quoting you. The answers sort the field out quickly.

How the day runs
The crew rings ahead, then walks both properties before touching anything. That walk sets the loading order and spots whatever is not coming through a door in one piece.
Then it goes in sequence. Carpet protection down. Wrapping on. Heavy furniture against the bulkhead and strapped. Boxes filling the gaps around it.
If you are on completion day, the clock belongs to the solicitors. Funds usually move between midday and two, keys come from the estate agent afterwards, and until they land nobody is going anywhere. In a property chain everything travels in one load, because there is no second run.
Keys in hand is the calmer day. Both properties open, the job runs in stages, and it often costs less.
Keep one box out of the van. Kettle, mugs, chargers, medication, a change of clothes.
