How the day runs,from the walk-through to the last box
A call comes before the van does, and the crew walks through both addresses before anything is picked up. Ten minutes there settles the loading order and catches the wardrobe that is not going to clear a Bailey staircase in one piece.
After that the work has a fixed rhythm. Protection over the floors first, wrapping second, the weight loaded tight to the bulkhead and strapped, then boxes packed into whatever space is left. The far end reverses it.

And where it stops
Standard covers the van, the crew, floor protection, blanket and bubble wrap, loading, transport, unloading, and putting each item in the room you point at.
It does not cover taking furniture apart or putting it back together. Beds, wardrobes and flat pack come apart before we arrive and go back together after we leave.
That is a real limit and it is better known now than at eight in the morning with a wardrobe stuck on a landing. Standard is the right choice if you own a screwdriver, you have time in the week beforehand, and you would rather the money went into the house than the move.
And what it actually includes
Premium is the whole job. Packing materials arrive with the crew. We pack, dismantle, load, unload, reassemble, and set the house up before we go.
You walk into built beds, furniture in position and nothing leaning against a wall in pieces.
It suits you if you are working the week of the move, if there are children or older relatives involved, or if you have no intention of spending a Saturday hunting for an Allen key.

The Bailey colleges
Castle, Hatfield, St John’s, St Chad’s and St Cuthbert’s sit on a narrow one way street inside the World Heritage Site, in buildings that are centuries old. Stairs, no lift, no parking at the door and a tight window. These are planned, not improvised.
The Hill colleges
Van Mildert, Collingwood, Grey, St Aidan’s, Trevelyan and Josephine Butler on Elvet Hill and South Road. Better vehicle access, longer carries from the car park, and everybody leaving on the same weekend.
Mount Oswald and Sheraton Park
South College, John Snow and Ustinov, plus around 1,000 beds at Mount Oswald alone. Modern sites with proper access and strict move out slots.
Private halls
Ernest Place, Duresme Court at Neville’s Cross and Dun Holm House at the Riverwalk. Loading bays and lifts that need booking with the building, not with us.
The HMO belt
Gilesgate, Claypath, Crossgate, Hallgarth Street, New Elvet and the streets under the viaduct. Terraced houses, four to six students, no driveway, and everyone moving the same week.
End of tenancy has a harder deadline than a completion. Keys go back at a set hour, the inventory check follows immediately and your deposit depends on it. Book the van for the morning so the afternoon is free for cleaning, and photograph the meters and every empty room before you hand the keys over.
Booking, changing and cancelling
We need 24 hours’ notice. That is genuinely the minimum, and it is far less than the firms in this city that want a survey visit before they will quote at all.
Cancel free up to 48 hours before your move. Change your date up to 24 hours before it.
Book once contracts have exchanged, though. Before exchange a completion day is an intention and intentions slide. The exception is a student let, where the date is fixed by the tenancy and you should book as early as you can.
Parking in Durham, the honest version
Durham city was not laid out for a Luton and there is no way around that. The peninsula, Palace Green, the Bailey, Saddler Street and Silver Street sit inside the World Heritage Site — narrow, largely one way, partly cobbled, with restrictions a removals vehicle cannot ignore. Crossgate, Claypath and the terraces off North Road have no driveways at all, so the van stands on the road or it stands nowhere.
Durham County Council can arrange a suspension or a dispensation where loading restrictions or resident permit zones apply. Applications run in working days rather than hours, so this goes on your list the day your date is fixed.
Where the van stands
Vehicle access to the historic centre is separately controlled and has been for years. If you are moving into or out of the peninsula, tell us at booking so we can sort the access before the morning rather than during it.
The practical point does not change. Park at the door and a two bedroom flat is out in two hours. Park sixty yards back and every item you own makes that trip on foot, and a morning becomes an afternoon.

- Name every charge that can be added on the day. The trade list is long: long carry, flight of stairs, waiting time, late keys, fuel surcharge, parking permits. All legal, all common, most of them unmentioned until the van is loaded and you have lost your leverage.
- Is dismantling included? Ask this one directly. Some quotes assume it, others charge for it and tell you afterwards. Ours is a Standard or Premium choice you make on screen before you commit.

The biggest day in the Durham calendar and effectively a city wide road closure. Nothing gets moved through the centre that day and we do not pretend otherwise.

The peninsula and the World Heritage Site

The river crossings
Elvet, Framwellgate, Prebends and the Kingsgate footbridge. Which one is usable decides the approach, and none of them was built for a loaded Luton.
