Sofas lie. They look soft and forgiving, then they jam in a Victorian architrave on Heaton Road while rain blows in from the coast. Measure first, lift second, swear never again third. Here is the straight version — numbers, angles, and when to stop pretending your back is twenty-one.
Ballpark YourVans numbers while you measure: single sofa collection from £55, studio or one-bed moves inside Newcastle often £95–£150, two-beds £180–£280, three-beds £280–£420, and a three-bed down to London typically £650–£950 — fixed in the quote, not a rounded-up surprise on the doorstep.
Before you touch the sofa — measure everything
Tape measure out. Sofa height, width, depth — write it down. Every doorway: clear opening width and height, including internal doors you forgot existed. Stairwell tightest width and ceiling height at the turn — that is where three-seaters die. Destination room doorway too — moving out is only half the story.
Odd tip you will not read elsewhere: if you are squeezing through an internal door on a mid-terrace off Chillingham Road, pop the door off its hinges before you fight the sofa — five minutes with a screwdriver often buys 8cm of clearance without touching the frame. Cheap fix. Huge difference.
Can the sofa be disassembled?
Flip it. Legs often unscrew — check for bolts hidden under felt pads. Some backs zip off or clip; sectionals almost always split. IKEA-style frames usually surrender to the original Allen key if you still have it rattling in a kitchen junk drawer. Photograph the order of bolts before you strip them — reassembly is not a memory sport.
Leg clearance
How to protect your sofa during the move
Blankets first, then stretch wrap over fabric if the weather is doing that fine North Sea drizzle thing. Cardboard corners on exposed edges — corners lose paint on paintwork first. Bubble wrap on feet. Never drag on legs — lift or slide on furniture sliders on hard floors; on carpet, cardboard under the base beats shredding the pile. Cushions travel separately so they do not get crushed into weird shapes.
The technique for moving a sofa through a doorway
Stand it on end, hook through the opening in a slow arc — two people, one guiding, one carrying weight. Communicate before you lift: "tilt", "hold", "down" — not mid-swing guesses. If the frame is the pinch point, hinge pins out, door off, problem smaller. Sliders on laminate in a new-build near Great Park save your knees; on older boards still go slow.
Moving a sofa on stairs
Bottom person carries load going up, controls descent coming down. Furniture straps spread weight so shoulders stay attached. Check ceiling height at the turn — that is where fabric meets plaster and nobody wins. If the sofa wedges, stop. Reassess. Swearing does not change geometry.

When to hire professionals
If vertical clearances still say no after legs are off. Corner units over three metres. Any history of slipped discs — not worth the hero story. Long-distance where you cannot strap safely inside a mate's short-wheelbase. We move sofas past tight entries every week — blankets already on the van, insurance already in the price.

How YourVans handles furniture removal
Type the item, postcodes, date — fixed number in about a minute. Crew lands with blankets, straps, sliders, and the patience you ran out of after the second doorway. Seven days a week. Insurance included. If you are in NE1–NE7 permit land, tell us when you book so we align with your suspension bay — we have seen too many sofas stuck curbside while someone runs inside for a PDF.
